Lahore has more people calling themselves interior designers than any other city in Pakistan, and no register, no licence and no minimum standard between them. That is not a criticism of the good ones — it is simply the market you are shopping in, and it means the burden of telling them apart falls on you.
The good news is that it takes about four questions, and none of them are about taste.
Designer, decorator or contractor?
Three quite different businesses use the same word. A decorator selects finishes and furniture and is often very good at it. A contractor executes drawings somebody else produced. A design-and-build studio does both, and carries the risk when the two disagree.
The distinction matters most at the moment something does not fit. With a decorator and a separate contractor, that becomes a conversation between two companies with you in the middle. With one studio, it is a conversation with one company. In our experience that is where most of the misery in a Lahore fit-out is created — not in the design, in the hand-offs.
Ask who actually builds the joinery
This single question sorts the market faster than anything else. Some studios design and then send the drawing to whichever workshop is cheapest that month. The workshop changes between projects, and sometimes within one.

Whether that is an advantage worth having is a fair question — the honest answer is that it costs us more in logistics and buys you consistency that a rotating list of subcontractors cannot give. What Lahore specifically does to joinery
Lahore is not Karachi, and a specification copied from a coastal project is not automatically right here. The annual swing is wider: genuinely dry winters, then a monsoon that pushes indoor humidity up hard and fast. Board and timber move across that range every year for the life of the kitchen.
- Moisture-resistant board in kitchens and vanities, not as an upgrade line but as the default.
- Every cut edge banded, including the ones nobody will see. Monsoon humidity finds unsealed edges.
- Hardware rated for the actual door weight, so tall wardrobe doors do not begin to drop after the first wet season.
- Dust discipline on site. Lahore construction dust is relentless, and it is the difference between a tolerable fit-out and a miserable one.

How to compare the quotes you get
You will be given numbers that differ by a factor of two and appear to describe the same kitchen. They do not. Before comparing anything, get every quote itemised into the same five lines — carcass, fronts, worktop, hardware, lighting and installation — and the gap will usually explain itself within a minute.
The most common place a Lahore quote is quietly reduced is hardware. Hinges and runners are a modest share of the total and close to all of the daily experience. See it before it is cut
The most expensive mistakes in an interior are the ones nobody was shown. A flat elevation drawing is not a room, and most clients cannot read one — which is not a failing on their part, it is a failing of the drawing.

The year-two question
Joinery moves in its first year. Something will want adjusting — a door, a drawer front, a soft-close that has gone slightly out. The question worth asking before you sign is who comes back, and whether they will still exist.
Ask any Lahore studio for two client references from projects finished at least eighteen months ago, and call them. Not to ask whether they liked the kitchen — they will say yes — but to ask what happened when something needed fixing.
